This plant is an upward grower and being an evergreen, the broadly elliptic and dark-green leaves will be present year-round. And add beautiful green colours to your garden during the cold browns and greys of winter.
The Camellia Japonica “Doctor King” has beautiful double flowers with pleasant, red-pink colours. In the middle of each bloom are stamens of either soft yellows or pinks with yellow tips.
Remove dead heads after flowering to encourage future growth. Prune after the flowering season, as the buds set in summer for the following season.
The plant prefers partially-shaded areas, which offer protection, but allow regular moisture to be available. One suggested planting option is to use a pot or tub that allows for a more acidic soil while retaining moisture, but drains well.
With winter protection in colder climates, “Doctor King” will provide you with wonderful spring blooms that are a little bit later than some other plants in the Camelia family. However, ensure protection from the combination of frost and sun exposure. In addition to being sheltered and protected for winter, this plant needs to avoid exposure to the rising sun as this can cause the blooms to spoil while there is still frost on the plant.
