Gaultheria Procumbens, also known as Checkerberry is a dwarf evergreen shrub that forms an eye-catching, spreading carpet of dark green, red tinted and metallic tones. The rounded, leathery leaves are aromatic when crushed and turn reddish in winter. White-pinkish, urn-shaped flowers appear mid to late summer followed by chunky red berries that nestle among the leaves and last a long time. An excellent choice for containers and it also makes a handsome ground-covering plant for a shadier spot.
Plant in moist but well-drained, acidic soil. They grow best in partial shade and tolerate full shade but they do not particularly like full sun exposure. When planted directly in the ground, they can spread without limit through shallow spreading roots. The creeping and suckering stems are easily controlled by chopping through them with a spade once a year.
